Five Things You Didn’t Know About Google Glass

February 7, 2014 By Lee Ways

So, you have planned to buy Google Glass and now you must be looking for some additional knowledge for the same. Google glass was indeed one of the most anticipated gadgets of the millennium. It is not just an extension of any Android device, but it is altogether a whole new gadget in itself designed to perform day to day tasks.

The computing headgear was launched by Google in 2012 and since then has been creating a lot of excitement among people from all walks of life. However, only a few people actually know what it can exactly do. So, here we have listed down some unique facts about Google Glasses that will help you know this gadget better.

It Is Not Just a Wearable Camera

Undoubtedly, glass lets you take pictures and videos of your friends and objects of your choice in real time. But, it is much more than just a camera attached to a glass. The Glass is like a tiny wearable computer that runs on Android OS. It can run Android application and even access Google services as per your daily requirements. What else?! You can even ask your Glass to answer the questions for you related to navigation, or some general information. Apart from these, it can do another amazing things, without you having to move your hands at all!

Voice Control is Key to Google Glass

The basic idea behind the planning and designing of the Google Glass was to bring revolution in the way people interact with gadgets. It aims at eliminating touch commands by featuring activated voice commands. The phrase “Okay Glass” triggers the gadget to prepare itself for a command.

For example, you can say “Okay, Glass, click the picture” to initialize the camera feature. Or, if you want to Google Hangout with your group of friends, you could say, “Okay, Glass, Hangout with Pals team.”

Glass Also Features Touch-Sensitive Panel

Most of the Glass applications can be controlled using voice commands, but the new version also features a touch-sensitive panel. Some other glass features can also be activated and deactivated by making subtle head movements. For instance: the head wake up features lets you turn on or off the display.

Some newly introduced applications used in the Google Glass may even be operated without voice commands, head tilts or gestures. For example: the Winky application allows you to take a picture with a wink of an eye.

It’s Not Really A Pair of Glasses You Could Wear Everywhere

Google Glass might look like a pair of glasses, but it’s not really a pair of conventional glasses. There is no glass lens installed in the current frame of the object. Since the basic purpose of the frame is to hold the display and camera lens, the need to add lenses may not do any good to the wearer.

However, Google is said to be making plans for incorporating lenses in the frame to make the Glass more stylish and usable for alternative purpose. Google is reportedly in talk with some renowned designers and we’re yet to see what it brings for the end users.

Google Glass Is Not a Gimmick

A lot of people think that it is just a crazy experiment. But, it should be noted that Glass is not just like any Star trek Gimmick. It is here to stay for a very long time and might even bring revolution in the technological department as well. If taken seriously, it can change the way people use their gadgets to perform day to day tasks. It’s certain that wearable electronics can represent the next step this evolution.

Initially, Google Glass was only available to developers for a price of $1500. But, in the last month of 2013, the company made efforts to make it publicly available. All you need to do is sign up to Google Play Music All Access to get invitation to buy the product.
